Unify

This is a short write up I did on an article from the "Daily Nation." Some ideas or phrases are not mine.

It seems that the tremors that have hit Nairobi do have a good side, which is that the people have “united in the face of an impending catastrophe.” For once, we have forgotten about politics, elections, the rising cost of bread and flour, and all the other things that seem to be our first priority. Police, after reporting no rapes, carjacking, or robberies during the week, said that there is an “increased police presence”, perhaps because the criminals did not want to “meet their Maker with blood on their hands.” Because of the nervousness of wondering when the next tremor will hit, if it does, and how hard it would be, people have been checking on each other, and looking out for their co-workers and family. This atmosphere is like a breath of fresh air amidst the chaos and confusion
However, the author of this article says that he doesn’t like the fact that in the midst of this refreshing atmosphere, the government scolds us for being so paranoid. He said that he wants to know if rescue workers in the hospital are ready to act, if firemen are ready to go. Instead of scolding us, why can’t the Government give us the assurance that if an earthquake does hit, they will be ready for it? The people in Nairobi, while enjoying this break from the normal headlines, need to feel calmness about them knowing that the Government is prepared to handle what might happen!
In my opinion, you cannot get a full sense of unity unless you know that the Government is backing you up. As one nation, I think we need to feel protected and know that the Government is ready with their services and equipment. I do not keep up with this particular subject, but what is the National Budget like? Is Congress spending more then they have? If any natural disaster was to hit Nairobi, what sort of funds do we have to rebuild, if the need arises? I think that in some cases, the Members of Parliament need to stop spending their money for their own particular uses and start to use them to make buildings stronger and roads safer. How would that make the people feel? Of course it would make them feel more protected! It is time for us ALL to be unified; both the Government and the residents.
